Mantra for field Geologist: "Print it the way you see"
When you are on the field trip or you been posted as well site geologist, you prime duty is to study the surface or subsurface geology. Most of the time what geologist do is extrapolated or manipulate the observed data to suite the planned program. It is totally a wrong way and doing so will surely degrade you as a geologist.
What is a role of Geologist in field or well-site:
Just observer, study and note what you see. It like a printer, what it does when we give print command it read the page saw what is in and print it the same way in the page. It will never manipulate. The same way geologist have to do when they are in field work.
Why it so?
What we do is for cause, and what geologist do is for global cause, say if he is in oil industry and posted as well-site geologist, then his role is to drill the well, gather the data and transmit to office for further study. So all the operations are heavily depend on the data provided by well-site geologist. If he manipulate anything then the entire study based on it will be proven wrong.
Reason for Geologist to make errors:
The senior geologist wont normally do mistakes normally, the problem lies with young geologist who are under immense pressure to impress the management. what they don't want is that their name in industry must be safe, in doing so sometimes even the senior geologist what they do is not reporting any unexpected change of lithology or any different behavior of the formation fearing any bad remarks upon them if those observations proved to be wrong.
It is up to the industry or the guide to keep their employees and students more free and teach them what is their role. Otherwise there is no point in keeping a field Geologist.
